Installing Tipper

It's a few taps more than a Play Store app. Here's the whole thing.

1. Download the APK

On your Android phone, tap the download button on this site. Chrome may warn that the file "can harm your device" — that's Android's standard message for any app from outside the Play Store. Tap Download anyway.

2. Open the file

Pull down your notifications and tap the completed download (or open the Files app → Downloads → the tipper APK).

3. Allow the install

The first time, Android asks you to allow installs from your browser: Settings → Install unknown apps → Chrome → Allow from this source. Then come back and tap Install. (You can switch that permission back off afterward.)

4. Turn on capture

Open Tipper. The first time, it opens on Finish setting up Tipper — tap Read the Dasher screen. (Later, Settings (menu ☰) → Enable in accessibility settings does the same.) Find Tipper tip capture in Android's accessibility menu, toggle it On, and confirm.

Android shows a strong warning here — it's describing what accessibility permissions can do in general. Tipper's permission is scoped to the DoorDash Dasher app only, and what it reads is stored on your phone; the app doesn't send it to me unless you choose to email me a log from Settings.

5. Optional — the offer-speed map

For the offer-speed map (not needed for tip capture), Tipper needs location: Settings → Enable location, then set it to Allow all the time (because Tipper records while the DoorDash app is the one on screen). With location allowed, Tipper records where your phone is while you dash, including in the background, and keeps it in its data and backups on your phone; Time & miles per delivery, if you turn it on, also uses it to time each delivery and measure your miles. Details are in the privacy policy.

6. Dash

That's it. Do a delivery. When Tipper reads the tip on the delivery-complete screen and saves it, you'll get a Tip saved ✓ notification with the amount, if notifications are on. If something is missing, or it can't tell which delivery a tip belongs to, the delivery waits in the Review inbox for you to check instead.

Updating Tipper

With a subscription or the free trial, the Insights screen checks for a new version, normally no more than once a day, and shows an Update available notice when one is out: tap Get it. Without a subscription you won't see that notice, so check the download page. Download the new APK and install — it goes right over the old version and all your data stays. Do not uninstall first (that deletes your data unless you've exported a backup).

Your license key

There's just one app — no second download. In the current version you don't need a subscription to record: Tipper records your deliveries and tips automatically without one. A subscription unlocks Insights (including Where to dash next), the Tip map and the Offer speed map. When you start your trial on this site, your license key arrives by email right away. Open Tipper, paste the key into the unlock screen, and you're set: free for 30 days, then $9.99/month — cancel anytime. A card is required at checkout.
