How long do DoorDash drivers actually wait between orders?

Start a dash and the app hands you an estimated wait. Ask any dasher how that's going: sometimes it's right, and sometimes you sit in a parking lot for half an hour wondering if the app is broken. The honest answer to "how long will I wait?" is: it varies more than the estimate suggests, the estimate isn't about you, and the only wait time that matters is the one you measure yourself. This page is about what the estimate actually is, why your real number is usually worse, and how to find out what yours is.
The three kinds of waiting in a dash
"Wait time" gets used for three different things, and mixing them up is how dashers end up arguing past each other:
- Waiting between offers: parked, online, no ping. This is the wait DoorDash's estimate is about, and the one this page is about.
- Waiting at the restaurant: order accepted, food not ready. Different problem: you're "engaged," but the clock on that delivery is running.
- Driving to a zone: the "Navigate to zone" limbo before you're eligible for offers at all.
All three eat your hourly rate. Only the first one is invisible on your earnings screen. DoorDash reports what you made, not what you sat through to make it.
What the estimated wait actually is
DoorDash doesn't publish how the estimate is calculated, so anyone claiming to know its exact formula is guessing. What's observable: it's a zone-wide, moment-in-time forecast. It can't know which corner of the zone you're parked in, what you tend to accept or decline, or what the next hour looks like. Treat it the way you treat a weather forecast for an entire county: related to your street, but not a promise about it.
It also can't account for the feedback loop it creates: a "busy" badge attracts dashers, and every extra dasher online dilutes the queue the estimate was based on. The signal degrades because people respond to it.
Why your real wait is usually longer
The kind of gap measuring can reveal at a single spot. Sample data.
A few reasons the gap opens up, none of which the estimate can see:
- Dasher supply. More drivers online than the demand supports means everyone's queue gets longer, and the estimate lags the flood it invited.
- Where you sit. Zones are big. Parking on the dead edge of a "busy" zone gets you the dead edge's reality and the busy zone's estimate.
- What you decline. Declining bad offers is usually the right money call, but every decline extends the current wait. That tradeoff is real, and it's invisible unless you're measuring both sides of it: longer waits, better orders, what's the net?
- Time of day. The same spot can be a 5-minute spot at lunch and a 25-minute spot at 3 PM. An estimate that's right on average can be wrong at both ends.
Wait time is the number that decides your hourly rate
Simple math, no data needed: a $20 order that takes 20 minutes looks like $60 an hour. Add the 15 minutes you waited before the ping and it's a $34-an-hour reality. Same order, same driving. The wait is the difference. Two dashers with identical deliveries can have wildly different real hourly rates purely on where and when they wait.
California makes this concrete: Prop 22's earnings guarantee counts engaged time only: accept to drop-off. The minutes between offers don't exist as far as the guarantee is concerned. Measuring your wait is measuring your unpaid time.
How to measure yours
The manual way: note the time whenever you go online or complete a delivery, note it again when the next offer lands, and log it per location. It works, and almost nobody sustains it past a week. You're driving, and the parking lot where you wait 20 minutes is exactly where you least feel like doing bookkeeping.

What to actually do with the number
- Compare spots, not vibes. A "slow-feeling" spot with 8-minute waits beats an exciting one with 20-minute waits, every single shift.
- Give a spot a deadline. Decide in advance how long you'll sit before moving, and let your own history, not the badge, set that number.
- Price your declines. If declining junk offers stretches your wait from 6 minutes to 9 at a spot where orders average well, that's a trade worth making. If it stretches it to 25, it isn't. You can only know with the number.
- End dead dashes sooner. The hardest habit: a long wait feels like sunk cost that the next ping will redeem. Your measured average tells you when it won't.

Does DoorDash tell you how long you'll wait between orders?
It shows a zone estimate when you dash, but doesn't publish how it's calculated. It's a forecast for the whole zone, not a promise about your spot or your next hour.
Why am I not getting orders when the map says busy?
Busy is demand measured against dashers online, and the badge itself attracts more dashers. Your position in the zone, what you accept, and the hour matter more than the badge.
Does waiting between orders count toward Prop 22?
No. The guarantee is computed on engaged time only, so waits between offers are unpaid. That's the strongest argument for knowing exactly how long they are.
Can an app show hidden tips before I accept?
No. Para did it briefly in 2021 by reading data DoorDash's own app was downloading; DoorDash shut that down within weeks and hides the data now.
